Rapid, flexible, community-led support for LGBTIQ+ activists, groups, and organisations across Africa facing crisis, because in moments of danger, how fast help arrives can decide what happens next.
Across Africa, LGBTIQ+ activists, organisations, and communities continue to face violence, forced displacement, arrests, online harassment, blackmail, restrictive laws, and humanitarian crises. In many situations, immediate support can mean the difference between safety and serious harm. EATHAN’s Africa LGBTIQ+ Emergency Response Fund (The Fund) is a 7 months rapid response mechanism established to provide urgent, flexible, and community-led support to LGBTIQ+ individuals, groups, and organisations facing emergencies across the African continent. The Fund exists to ensure that LGBTIQ+ people and movements across Africa are not left alone in moments of crisis. Through rapid, community-led support, The Fund aims to protect lives, strengthen resilience, and sustain the ongoing struggle for dignity, safety, and human rights for all.

What Can be Covered
Flexible Tiered Support
Funding amounts vary with the urgency, scale, and nature of the emergency, aligned to the Fund’s tiered grant structure.

Application process
Please note that;
1. Direct referrals from trusted partner organisations, funders, networks or other organisations are also welcome.
2.Due to the high volume of emergency support requests, only selected applicants will be contacted.
What we look for
Applicants must show
- ✓A genuine emergency or protection concern
- ✓Clear connection to LGBTIQ+ advocacy, organising, or community support
- ✓Immediate or emerging risk
- ✓A feasible response plan
- ✓Commitment to safeguarding and confidentiality
Applications should include
- ✓Background on the individual or organisation
- ✓Description of the emergency
- ✓Proposed response activities
- ✓Estimated budget, in USD or local currency
- ✓Expected outcomes
- ✓At least two references (individuals or organisations)
Your safety comes first
All applications are handled through a secure, and confidential process. Sensitive information is only accessed by authorised reviewers and emergency response personnel. EATHAN applies survivor-centred safeguarding, digital security, and protection protocols throughout review and grantmaking process.
The Fund uses a light-touch reporting approach appropriate for emergency situations. Reporting stays proportionate to an emergency response. Successful applicants may be asked for a short narrative report, simplified financial accountability, and basic updates on outcomes and beneficiary safety.Documentation requirements remain flexible to avoid placing applicants or beneficiaries at further risk.
