Indian court rules sexual orientation is a human right in historic ruling

India’s Supreme Court has said that privacy, including sexual orientation, is a fundamental right of citizens in a landmark ruling.

Human rights activists have celebrated the verdict, which could have a huge impact on the country’s LGBT population.

It is hoped that the court’s statement could eventually help to reverse India’s ban on homosexuality.

The judges said: ‘It is an individual’s choice as to who enters his house, how he lives and in what relationship.

‘The privacy of the home must protect the family, marriage, procreation and sexual orientation, which are all important aspects of dignity.’
