East Africa Trans Conference 2022 Application Form

Trans Thriving: Strengthening East African Trans Movements Post-COVID

East Africa Trans Conference 2022

3rd – 5th November 2022

Nairobi, Kenya

EATHAN is super excited to announce the East Africa Trans Conference that will be held from the 3rd to the 5th of November 2022. This will be the first time we have it under this name and the 2nd time we as EATHAN convene a meeting by and for trans and gender-diverse people in East Africa.

The conference will be a great opportunity for EATHAN’s 26 members, trans activists in the region, LGBQ activists and organizations, funders, partners, and stakeholders to meet, share, discuss, network and learn – all towards advancing, protecting and upholding the rights and livelihoods of trans and gender diverse people in East Africa.

The East Africa Trans Conference theme is Trans Thriving: Strengthening East African Trans Movements Post-COVID!!!

This theme is inspired by the resilience of trans and gender-diverse people during the pandemic period. Covid-19 posed a myriad of challenges and setbacks for our community. During this period, most of us had limited access to basic necessities such as food, medication and housing. Most funders reprioritised their funding to emergency support, which was great but insufficient and people had to find ways to survive. Trans and gender-diverse organizing in the region endured despite the limitations that came with the pandemic. It is worth noting that EATHAN turned 5 last year amidst the chaos that was covid.

Session Proposals:

We invite EATHAN members, trans and gender-diverse activists  and organizations in the region to submit session proposals for the following, that speak to any of the identified topics;

Individual presentation

Organizational presentation – 1 representative

Topics:

Creative thriving solutions during the pandemic – how did you survive?

Emerging advocacy methodologies – what new ways do you employ in your advocacy work?

Improving our mental health – what suitable mental health solutions exist (if any)?

What’s in a name? Challenges & developments in the legal name change.

Gender Affirming Care – do they exist in your context? What are the challenges? Solutions? Case studies?

HIV & Trans People – how prevalent is HIV in our community? What interventions are there? Do they work? What are the challenges? How do you or have you overcome these challenges?
